Founded by art historians Alicia Reuter and Sophie Jung, artist Zoë Claire Miller, and painter Ulrich Wulff in 2013, Berlin Art Prize is an independent award for contemporary art in Berlin, Germany. For the award’s selection process, YNM developed a web-based app focusing on transparent, nondiscriminatory art judging.
Yes-No-Maybe App was created to guide two groups of users through either the submission or review stages of the award. Following a call for submissions, applicants submit their work via the app’s web interface, which guides them through every step of the process. Once the submission phase is complete, the jury rates the portfolios in a pre-defined number of judging rounds. Tags help to keep even large numbers of submissions manageable and searchable. During the review process, jury members see a full-screen showcase of each portfolio where submissions are anonymized to prevent biases while rating. Both the no-frills presentation and anonymization of the submissions aid in placing the focus solely on their contents.
Internal chat for jury members
After rating, with options yes, no, and maybe, another submission is selected randomly and displayed. Within an integrated chat, jurors may leave comments pertaining to each portfolio. Ultimately, one or more finalist is determined. Using statistics and records of juror’s ratings allows for a jury decision that is both well-documented and transparent. While developed for artist portfolio applications, Yes-No-Maybe App can easily adapt to other selection and application processes in cultural institutions and beyond.
The project was supported and sponsored by Senatsverwaltung Berlin.
